The Early Childhood classrooms are multi-age environments designed specifically for children. The beautiful environments present the materials in a sequential order on the shelves from simple to complex, from concrete to abstract. The entire environment is created to facilitate their learning process. Maria Montessori observed that children learn by doing and wrote that the “hand was the instrument of the mind”. The Montessori curricula, techniques and materials satisfy the natural tendency for this age child to learn by doing. |
Independence, coordination, order, self-discipline and concentration are developed. As a child moves throughout the environment, there is freedom to choose from a range of activities and experiences that satisfy his or her unique interests. There is freedom of movement to allow for social interactions. The classroom operates as a small community and emphasis is place on care and respect of oneself and of others. |
The classroom has an uninterrupted work period in the morning when children have the opportunity to select individual work, as well as work with their peers. During this time the teacher provides individual and group lessons to children and guides each child in their individual progress within the class. The Montessori curriculum is enriched with specialty classes in music, art, Spanish and PE.

Kindergarten
Our school provides a full day Montessori class for our kindergarten students. The morning is spent in their assigned classroom with a mixed age group of children. It is a wonderful experience for the kindergarten student to be the “oldest” among their classroom peers. After lunch, the Kindergarten students are provided another extended work period in the classroom. The emphasis for the afternoon work is in mathematics, language, science and cultural studies. Our goal is for successful transition into the elementary classroom.

Our kindergarten students also have additional field trips and specialty classes such as art, music, PE and Spanish.

We believe that the third year (Kindergarten) is extremely important to the completion of the Montessori Early Childhood/Primary Class experience. Please note that in Loudoun County, the public school system allows children with birth dates to extend to December 31 (as opposed to September 30) who attend an accredited private kindergarten such as the one at The Boyd School to enter first grade the following year. The Boyd School is one of three accredited private schools in Loudoun County. |
